Roots of Unity
Today's site, from Scientific American's Blog Network, offers mathematician Dr.
Evelyn Lamb's articles on noteworthy math topics. Gentle Subscribers, even
those without any particular affinity with the subject, will discover
surprisingly interesting posts exploring the boundaries of the discipline.
"Mathematics: learning it, doing it, celebrating it ... the mathematics I find
beautiful, fun, and surprising, along with other science topics, some with
connections to math, and some without." - from the website
This well-written blog seeks to encourage the interest of the general public in
some of the challenges faced by scientists today which relate specifically to
their mathematical underpinnings. Recent posts have discussed making a candy
corn fractal with reference to the Sierpinski triangle, and the puzzle, to
non-math types, of Borromean Rings. Under the seemingly accessible category of
Math Art to Love, an older, eye-opening post reveals that "Your Telephone Is
Lying to You About Sounds," complete with video. Also featured are book reviews
of titles which might normally slip under the radar of the 'mathophobic' but a
recent review of "Weapons of Math Destruction" provides a startling look at the
implications for democracy and equality because of a reliance on the alleged
impartiality of algorithms and Big Data.
