El Capitan, Yosemite
Today's site, an offshoot of Google Maps Street View Treks, offers a soaring
view of ascending one of America's most famous mountains, El Capitan in
Yosemite National Park. Gentle Subscribers, who can experience vertigo by
simply looking over a second story balcony, might like to brace themselves for
this amazing presentation, which surprisingly, does not require the latest,
most up-to-date browser.
"Welcome to The Nose of El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park -- the most
iconic rock climb on earth. Tighten your harness and double-check your knot, to
join Lynn Hill, Alex Honnold, and Tommy Caldwell on a 3,000 foot interactive
journey up El Capitan." - from the website
With direct links to a YouTube video, brief interviews with the climbers, and
amazing footage of the ascents, this mesmerizing presentation provides dazzling
footage. Information in the Behind the Scenes section reveals details about the
equipment used by the climbers, along with interviews with Yosemite Park
experts from the National Parks Service, from ornithologists to geologists, and
eye-opening vistas of the mountain. Small navigation dots allow random
exploration of the presentation with images of night time camping on a mere
ledge and the "King Swing" maneuver among other equally dramatic clips.
