How-To Geek
Today's site offers one of the most helpful and user-friendly tech publications
online. Gentle Subscribers will discover a comfortingly, if not downright cozy,
collection of useful articles, many of them prompted by despairing requests
from bewildered computer users.
"We are an online tech magazine, dedicated to providing interesting articles,
how-tos, and even fun trivia to our audience of geeky (and not-so-geeky)
readers. Founded in 2006, How-To Geek's goal was to bring a better how-to site
to the internet -- with content that's understandable for regular people, but
geeky enough that the more technical readers would find it interesting as
well."
With a welcoming layout, efficient search engine, and archives extending over a
decade, the magazine provides an easy first stop to sort out vexing computer
issues. Although geared to the Windows OS, Apple and Linux challenges are
handled as well. While its strength lies in its many straightforward how-to
articles, written for the ordinary computer user with an abundance of
step-by-step screenshots, the publication also reports on the latest tech news.
Recent articles include a warning about the Mac App Store, an explanation of
Denial of Service attacks, and notes on the ubiquitous Windows System Volume
Information folders. Checking an article's publication date is advisable
because available articles can stretch back in time and become less than
relevant, although visitors will frequently point out this shortcoming. Along
with tech advice many pages are enlivened by pleasant, random facts such as the
current brief note on the homepage on the unusual characteristic of the Common
Poorwill.
