We had the talk when Kai was 8 over Spring Break because he kept asking
questions while I was driving. I watched a Ted Talk about "Why Eight is Great"
about teaching your kids at 8 years old before they start learning
(mis)information from other kids. I didn't use a book, I just googled some
anatomy and we had a talk. Of course, since he is a donor embryo baby, there
were the versions of how I got pregnant and how sex works which led to a very
funny conversation about how his friend's parents who just had their 4th child
must have had sex 4x!
He started needing deodorant very young, like 1st grade which surprised me. So
far I'm not dealing with outward signs of puberty, and as far as emotions go,
after the past year I have trouble with my emotions so I can't decipher what's
growing up or just a weird year. We don't have any male role models, so I'm
just trying to be as honest with him as I can be. Back in the day we just
learned from Judy Blume books!
