"The "super-Earth" planet known as GJ 1132b is 39 light years away and was
observed as it passed in front of a cool red dwarf star, blocking out some of
the star's light.
An Earth-sized planet orbiting a dim star 39 light years away has a hazy
atmosphere that could indicate the presence of a "water world", say scientists.
It is one of the first times astronomers have been able to detect an
atmosphere surrounding a small rocky planet. Similar observations using the
next generation of powerful telescopes could be used to look for life outside
the Solar System.
Until now, scientists have only been able to spot the atmospheres of giant
"hot Jupiter" exoplanets that are very unlikely to support life."

Washington Post, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden discussed the lifespan of
the ISS during the “There’s No Place Like Space” panel.
When asked if the ISS would have to retire, Bolden replied, “It is inevitable
— it’s a human-made structure with a lifetime.” Its year of expiration? 2028.
Bolden hinted that what could very well replace the ISS is an expandable
habitat, like the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM). At the end of
March, NASA sent BEAM to the ISS for a two-year demonstrative period to see
whether or not the module could replace some of the functions of the ISS."

"On April 19th, an asteroid known as 2014 JO25 will whiz by our Pale Blue Dot
from a comfortable distance—it’ll be roughly 1.1 million miles (1.8 million km)
away from us at closest approach. What’s really remarkable is how enormous this
thing is; according to NASA, the asteroid is about 2,000 feet (650 meters) in
length. That’s about the same size as the world’s longest slip-n-slide, or
like, a billion Chipotle burritos—the latter is an estimate.
“Although there is no possibility for the asteroid to collide with our planet,
this will be a very close approach for an asteroid of this size,” NASA said in
a statement. The agency added that it’s not uncommon for smaller asteroids fly
by Earth at the same distance that 2014 JO25 will, but its size is noteworthy.
“This upcoming close approach is the closest by any known asteroid of this
size, or larger, since asteroid Toutatis, a 3.1-mile (five-kilometer) asteroid,
which approached within about four lunar distances in September 2004.”

"...en halv miljard kronor är mycket pengar, som kan användas på många olika
sätt. Det är förståeligt att någon kan anse att detta belopp för en resa runt
månen är mycket pengar för ett slags lyxturism. Men när 20 000 svenska
Thailandturister flyr det svenska vintermörkret för en kostnad av
uppskattningsvis 25 000 per familj betalar de också en halv miljard. Hur ofta
ställs dessa kostnader i motsats till humanitära insatser? ...
Rymdturism kan vara en drivkraft för att utveckla teknik och lösningar för
människor i rymden också i andra sammanhang än turism. Och naturligtvis kommer
kostnaderna att falla på sikt.
Men det mest positiva med rymdturism är att det handlar om människor i rymden.
Oavsett om du är turist eller professionell astronaut så behöver du luft,
vatten och mat. Rymdturism bidrar till att vi hittar smarta lösningar. På
längre resor eller på en bas på månen behöver vi skapa smarta, återvinnande,
resurseffektiva och superhållbara system för vatten, avfall och matproduktion
...
Lyckligtvis har vi som civilisation råd med att göra mer än en sak åt gången.
Vi behöver inte välja mellan människan i rymden och att rädda världen. Låt oss
göra både och!"

"Den nya definitionen har lagts fram på den stora planetkonferensen LPSC 2017 i
Texas av doktoranden Kirby Runyon tillsammans med flera namnkunniga
planetvetare, bland dem Alan Stern, projektledare för Plutosonden New Horizons.
I forskarnas förslag (läs den här på LPSC:s hemsida) skriver de att de vill
behålla kriteriet att himlakroppen ska vara i hydrostatisk jämvikt, men lägger
till att det ska vara en substellär himlakropp som aldrig genomgått kärnfusion.
Förutom Pluto innebär det då att också månen ansluter sig till solsystemets
planetgäng. "
