Note: The show appears on the officially released CD set: 60 Greatest Old Time Radio Shows "Frank Sinatra & Friends." Danny does NOT appear. The"true" story of the romance between Frank and Judy, set in the year 1995. TT: 30mins. Audio condition: Excellent. Complete.

Ed O'Brien says this is a great half-hour with two of the truly iconic figures of the century. Danny Kaye was on tour and Sinatra and Judy subbed. The show was sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and featured Axel Stordahl and orchestra. It was aired on October 5, 1945 over CBS.

Sinatra opened with "That's Judy" and then Judy sang "How Deep is the Ocean". They did a duet on "Gotta Be This or That." Sinatra then introduced Axel and the band did an instrumental of "I've Got You under My Skin." "Til the End of Time" was sung by Sinatra and Judy joined him for a musical/comedy skit and then they sang "My Romance." Sinatra closed the show with "Put Your Dreams Away."

The Armed Forces broadcast had Sinatra singing "Suddenly It's Spring" and "Long Ago and Far Away" in lieu of the Pabst commercials. The show was part of the Radio Spirits 30-cd set of Sinatra's radio appearances. The quality was good, but there is a really great copy floating among collectors.

Harold Arlen accompanied Ms. Horne on piano
when she sang "It's A New World," with new lyrics
by Ira Gershwin, inspired by the August 28, 1963
Civil Rights March on Washington.

Dr. Martin Luther King introduced both performers.
He told the crowd (SRO) that "both performers
sought the attainment, through non-violent means,
of equality and full constitutional rights for all
Americans."

There was some controversy regarding the program.
Originally both performers were scheduled to appear
together in both halves of the program and they
would sing together. Sinatra rejected the idea and
Ms. Horne performed solo in the opening half and
Mr. Sinatra in the second half. They did not share the
stage and took separate bows at the conclusion
of the show. Ms Horne's daughter, Gail Jones,
was openly critical of Sinatra during the intermission.

According to Frank Sinatra, Jr, Martin Luther wept
openly during Sinatra's sensational reading of "Ol'
Man River."

Dr. King lauded both entertainers at the conclusion
of the evening's performances.

Sinatraphile Jim White writes that his wife Rowena insisted that they get top notch tickets for this concert in Houston .

White says he was reluctant because he didn't want to see or hear him on the decline. But she, as usual, was right.

Sinatra was, in every way, terrific, astonishingly vigorous and energetic that night, the third and last time White was to be in his audience.

SEEN AND HEARD
Dinah Shore's new Chevy Show series on
NBC -TV (hour -long program scheduled
for 10 telecasts during the 1956 -57 season,
on Fridays or Sundays) got off to a great
start Oct. 5, when Dinah and her guest,
Frank Sinatra, put on the best song exchange
to regale the tv audience since the famed
Ethel Merman -Mary Martin ditty duel on
the Ford 50th Anniversary telecast in June
of 1953 (if it's permissible to mention Ford
in commenting on the Chevy Show). Sure,
the comedy was weak, despite a good try by
Dizzy Dean, but who cared as long as Dinah
and Frankie were in good voice?

       Sammy Davis Jr. was set to share the bill with
Frank in Chicago. A heavy fog at the New York airport
stopped the planned takeoff. Sammy did the benefit
minus "The Leader."
         Around the same time, Sammy had the following
comments on Frank during an interview:

"There are no more Sinatras. He is one of a kind. He is just
the best there is. And when he is gone there won't be another
one.. Don't tell me about the John Davidsons . . . . Good, bad
or indifferent, enjoy him. Even on a so-so night, you can learn
from him. There's never been another performer who could phrase
a note like him, who could do what he does with a microphone.
And when he's cookin', look out. He is simply the best there is.
There is no other way to say it."
