Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien writes that on this Monday night, 44 years ago,
Joey Bishop was subbing for Johnny Carson. His guests were Phil Foster,
Juliet Prowse, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin. Dean's new show for NBC was a
smash hit, Joey showed promo clips Sinatra and Dean had done for the premier
show of September 16, 1965. They ran about 7 or 8 minutes and the audience
loved them.

Sinatra plugged "Assault on a Queen" and told Joey he would be filming "Any
Wednesday" with Sandy Dennis in February. Joey asked if either were
interested in singing a song. Dean begged off saying he didn't have his
guitar. Sinatra sang "Angel Eyes" with just piano. They did a few more plugs
and Dean mentioned his Matt Helm film. Highlights were Sinatra's singing and
Dean's very funny remarks.

SINATRA CUTS 4 DISCS: MAY DO A SINGLE
New York - Frank Sinatra is making four sides for the Bluebird label,
accompanied by a string ensemble, and if the discs sell well, he'll probably
go out on his own as a solo act early in 1942. Sinatra recently signed a
personal management contract with Tommy Dorsey's "Personal Management, Inc."
headed by Leonard Vannerson. When he and Tommy feel the time is right, Frank
will leave the Dorsey band, with Dorsey's agency continuing to handle his
bookings. Dorsey has a similar contract with Connie Haines and the Pied
Pipers, who also sing with his band now.

Note:  Frank played the Chase Club from 10/4 thru
10/10. His agent Abe Lastfogel, of William Morris,
got him a two week run at the Bill Miller's Riviera,
beginning 9/5 and then eight days at the Latin Casino,
in Philly before the St. Louis gig. Frank was paid $10,000
per week for four weeks of work. That was damn good
money in the fall of 1952.

p.s. I decided to look up the value of $10,000 in 1952
currency vis-a-vis today.
$10,000 in 1952 is equivalent in purchasing power
to about $98,082.26 in 2020, a difference of $88,082.26
over 68 years. The 1952 inflation rate was 1.92%.  -ED

Frank Sinatra, Oct. 4, 1974: Sinatra was on his "The Main Event" tour when
he played to a full house at the Aud. He opened with "The Lady Is a Tramp,"
and proceeded through a 70-minute set that included jazz-age classics ("I've
Got You Under My Skin"), maudlin pop hits ("Send in the Clowns") and the
dramatic ballads he'd become increasingly associated with ("My Way") as he
made his way through the September of his touring years. Sinatra would
return to the Aud on Oct. 8, 1976, and May 8, 1982.

Ed O'Brien reports that October 4, 1974 was a very cold Friday night in
Buffalo . On the way into the War Memorial Auditorium, I told my wife that
the perfect song for Sinatra to sing would be "Autumn in New York ."  I also
told her the odds were very slim because he hadn't sung it in years.
We had seats that placed us about 5 or 6 feet away from the rather small
circle-in-the- round stage. Sinatra was carried onto the stage and was
wearing a Buffalo Bills jacket. He had a gorgeous grey suit and looked very
fit.

He opened with "Tramp" and it was immediately obvious that the voice was in
great shape. I realized that he was almost close enough to touch. The fifth
number was "Send in the Clowns."  Sinatra sat on a stool, lit a cigarette
and the ashes landed on my pants just above my right knee. I never moved a
muscle and no harm was done. Jilly and Jerry Weintraub were kneeling next to
me in the aisle. You have no idea what it was like to be sitting 3 feet away
from Frank Sinatra when he sang "Ol' Man River."  Thrilling doesn't begin to
describe it.

His reading of "I've Got You under My Skin" and "Angel Eyes" were simply
magical. At the end of "Skin," a woman in the audience screamed and Sinatra
asked "Where does it hurt you, baby?"  (That's on the released Reprise LP.
At the Main Event, October 13, he sang "That Old Black Magic" as a coda to
"Skin."  He then told the 24,000 in attendance that it was the perfect time
of the year and, lo and behold, did sing "Autumn in New York ."  A lady in
the crowd asked for "Satisfy Me One More Time."  He told her he didn't do
"dirty songs."

The penultimate song was a rousing "The House I Live In" and then the much
expected and often demanded "My Way."  Sinatra was on stage for 70 minutes
and did 14 songs. As the lights came up, I suddenly realized Sinatra was
coming down the three steps right next to me. I stepped in front of him and
held out my hand. He grabbed it with a hand that felt like Gucci leather. I
told him how great he had been and he thanked me. I told him again and he
thanked me and said that he was glad that I enjoyed it. I remember being
very surprised at how short in stature he was. I guess his height was around
5 feet and 7 /½ inches. I am amazed that 35 years have flown by since that
wonderful evening. Sinatra, that evening, looked and sounded indestructible.

Ed O'Brien (2011):
Thirty-seven years ago this evening, I sat a few feet away from Sinatra and
witnessed a remarkable performance. After all these years, I am still struck
by how superior
his vocals efforts were in relationship to the much heralded but vastly
inferior Main Event
on 10-13-74. Listening to the hodge-podge Reprise LP, a bogus effort
claiming to be that
evening's performance, titled "The Main Event," I marvel at his singing on
"Skin" and "Angel
Eyes," both from the Buffalo concert. Reprise should have released the 10-4
show. The master
is sitting at Reprise. Why not release it ?

Ed O'Brien transcribed Sinatra's comments before "As Time Goes By"- "Now,
I'd like to sing one of my favorite songs of all time. Of all the songs I've
done, I have 25 of them. But this one is always the one I like to sing. This
and another one I sang years ago called "They're Digging up Father's Grave
to Build a Sewer." Lovely English madri-gal. If I did it here, this would be
an open parking lot like the other joint next door." TT 60mins.
