  Song was recorded on the 20th Century Fox soundstage.
     There was a 57 piece orchestra and Nelson Riddle arranged
     and conducted. Session ran from 3 to 6:45 p.m. But it was
     dropped from the final cut of the film. Capitol assigned a
     master number on 2-19-60. Song was released on the
     soundtrack album. I have seen two reviews of the album
     that mention how foolish it was not to have the Sinatra-
     Chevalier duet in the film. The same fate befell "I Like To
     Lead When I Dance" from "Robin & The 7 Hoods."

NOTE: Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien writes that Edsel was one of the biggest
mistakes ever made in Corporate America. But the CBS show on Sunday evening
in October of 1957 was a winner all the way. Crosby, Sinatra, Armstrong, and
Clooney looked better than the Braves beating the Yankees a week earlier.
Sinatra did a medley of his hits, sang some duets with Crosby. Rosie and
Sinatra did a marvelous15 minute medley to close the show, These three pros
giving a seamless performance! To other Siinatra highlights: Sinatra and
Armstrong singing "Birth of the Blues" with Louis doing some nifty horn work
and Sinatra singing "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi."

Ed O'Brien:
I happened upon the following information
earlier this week. In June of 1957 Ford Motor Co
was locked in serious negotiations regarding the
TV special that would herald the debut of their exciting
new middle priced Edsel. They had offered two of the
biggest names in show business a lot of money and an
open format for the proposed one hour broadcast.
And it wasn't Bing and Frank. Ford wanted
Marlon Brando and Cary Grant to co-host the
show. It certainly is interesting to imagine what
the two men would have done with that hour. By
going with Bing and Frank, Ford probably avoided
two disasters that year.

Ed O'Brien:
The Edsel Show was broadcast live to the eastern part of the United States
from the CBS Studios in Culver City, California. CBS made a videotape of the
show
and aired it three hours after the live broadcast to the western part of the
country.
The videotape was the first ever for CBS. They were so uncertain of the
technology
a kinescope of the show was lined up next to the tape in the event of a
sudden failure.
Everything went smoothly and a vastly improved method of rebroadcast became
available.
The Edsel show pulled an estimated audience of 53 million viewers. The
reviews
of the show were very favorable. Not so for the Edsel, though. One viewer
described
Ford's new auto as "looking like an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon."
There was an early afternoon rehearsal the day of the broadcast. Ford gave
Edsels to the stars of the show. Rosie Clooney would later describe an
embarrassing
moment for Ford. Leaving the rehearsal, she went to open the car door in the
parking
lot and the handle fell off. Obviously an omen of things to come.
Hailed as the single greatest infomercial ever aired on TV, the enormous
ratings
failed to generate any real interest in the Edsel.

Frank Sinatra has always appealed to the gambling
genre. His previous bookings in Las Vegas have
signalled turn away biz for the entire span. Now,
bolstered even more by the success of the Maggio
role in "From Here To Eternity," he reaches into
ranks of moderate bet-flingers and insures more
than capacity for his three-frame Sandstand.
Although high on the list as a top moneymaker in
Vegas, Sinatra's vocals and attitude have left much
to be desired among discriminating customers. With
this return, he fronts a dulcet musical ensemble and
warbles a rather subdued repertoire of standards. As
he meanders down memory lane, Sinatra slams the
door on his former worshippers to please an older and
less exuberant set of applauders.
Whether selling a fleeting hit parader or an evergreen,
the unmistakable stamp of quality is always evident.
Jarring the pleasant reverie are tendencies to insert
dubious gags or parody lines in great established
melodies, ennui and mechanically phrased offerings
of humility. Offset these by top showmanship, striving
toward perfection, flair for the dramatic, and that's
the very complex guy Sinatra.
Very few of the current crop of male singers could equal
his contouring of "My Funny Valentine," "Spring Is Here,"
"Someone To Watch Over Me," or create the spine-tingle
of his "One For My Baby." In these ballads he reaches
the heights. Such profuse programming of oldies tends
to pall, with similarity of mood and tempi needing even
more sock shots in the rhythm section than he formats.
Insertion of "This Can't Be Love," Coffee In Brazil," "All
Of Me" in mild jump tempo does aid somewhat in relieving
the legato streams. Although reception varies throughout,
Sinatra exits to kingsize mitts.

Ed O'Brien notes: This was Frank's first engagement at the Sands.
He would perform there many times over the next 15
years. In September of 1953 he would have a chamber
group ( Frank's description) of nine backing him. He
reduced it by one for the Sands appearances.

NOTE: Ed O'Brien observes that Sinatra walked out on stage 31 years ago this
evening. Vinnie Falcone did a vamp of Costa's arrangement of a Kander and
Ebb song and Sinatra sang "Start speading the news" and the "New York , New
York" era began in earnest..

His early concert versions were laidback and had more of a soft melodic
line. It was an instant winner with audiences throughout the world..
Initially, Sinatra was reluctant to record it. He felt it was Liza Minelli's
song. The response from concertgoers finally changed his mind. Often he
would introduce the song by saying "Here is a song introduced by Liza
Minelli and stolen by me." One of the great Sinatra signature songs, he
would close hundreds and hundreds of shows with it over the next 16 years.

Sinatraphile Vance Adair adds "Ed is absolutely right. Thereis little
indication here that the Kander and Ebb anthem is going to provide Sinatra
with his final and perhaps most memorable theme tune. He is both hesitant
and sounds slightly perplexed in these very early performances.,
Neverrthelesss, from its debut in 1978 to it swansong (at least partially)
in 1995. I have never heard a bad performance of this tune."
