I’ve said it often before, but I love Heinie Beau’s arrangements. An
underrated album.

*Shemmy:  *Those 4 "I Remember Tommy" were never released officially.
Are they available anywhere?  I have the "Inside Tommy" cd.
Are these outtakes from there by any chance?

The only song issued from the March 61 sessions at Reprise
was "In The Blue Of The Evening." Reprise sent that to me many years
ago. It has a bit of the session including "Take 8" called out.  The big
suitcase set in 1995 was originally 24 discs. We would have had a number
of n/r including the March 61 material. Sy Oliver told me he could hear
no real difference between the re-recorded tracks in May and the initial
attempts in March. Frank added seven strings for the redos. He wanted
a richer sound behind him. I was listening to "I Remember Tommy earlier
in the week. One of Frank's best efforts at Reprise. Great song selection,
great
singing and Sy's charts evoke the sounds of the big bands perfectly. Love
that
album.

Frankie Carle's Orchestra. Golden Gate, San Francisco (Reviewed Wednesday
Afternoon, March 20) Frank Sinatra, the slim, trim lad with the swoon-croon
pipes, the thin-faced boy with the wistful manner, stepped onto the stage
here- and suddenly a thousand female adolescents began screeching and
yelling. It was enough to scare the daylights out of any modest young
fellow-but the phenomenon labeled the Voice, unlike the non -vocal humpty
dumpty, seems to keep himself together. They (the adolescents) punctuated
his singing with ecstatic cries when he sang Night and Day. And, when the
'bantamweight's light but sustained baritone style worked out on such
smoothies as Aren't You Glad You're You and You Always Hurt the One You
Love, they chorused all over again. His awkward charm even managed to thaw
some of the ice off the more antique spectators. Axel Stordahl directs a 30
-piece band as accompaniment for Sinatra.. Also on the bill are the Four
Step Brothers, Harlem dancers, who delight with some terrific footwork.
They're a clever dance foursome. The Pied Pipers, who do I'll Never Smite
Again with Sinatra, are on their own with In the Middle of May and Dreams.
A unique impersonator is Stan Early, whose deft mimicry of such
personalities as Cary Grant and James Stewart gets humorous play. Whole
show is excellent, in fact, one of the Gate's finest vaude ventures. Pic,

*Ed Notes: Sinatra was working on a jazz album with a small group On
3-12-75 at T.T.G. Recording Studio there were three orchestral tracks laid
down for the album ( "Oh Babe, What Would You Say," "You Are The Sunshine
Of My Life" and "That Old Black Magic."). At the Caesars engagement, Frank
had an octet backing plus Bill Miller on piano. Don Costa conducted the Nat
Brandwynne Orchestra. The show opened with the singer at the back of the
stage and the scrim down. Miller played piano as Sinatra sang a very slow
ballad opening on Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life." The
octet backed him on the first three numbers with a real jazzy sound. The
musicians were Nino Tempo on tenor sax( he told me there was a lot of
rehearsal and Sinatra worked very hard to get the sound he was after),
Charles Shoemaker on vibes( he was dis- appointed the project was
abandoned), Francisco Aquabella playing bongos, Charlie Turner on trumpet,
Pat Rizzo on alto sax, Gene Cherico on bass, Al Viola played guitar and Irv
Cottler was the drummer. In all there were 12 shows done during the week's
engagement. I interviewed four members of the octet. They all remembered
how exciting it was to work with Frank in a nightclub and how eager he was
to record the jazz album with the small group. *
