I just remembered a remarkable contest that a radio station in N.Y.C. sponsored
in the mid 1940s.They wanted to see if anyone could rival Sinatra in
popularity. So, there was a weekly contestwith Frank taking on Bing, Perry,
Dick Haymes, V. Monroe and so on. Frank vanquished them all until he met his
match against the great crooner Gene Autry. The singing cowboy dethroned The
Voice. Some years back, I posted the Variety articles about this momentous
