Ed O'Brien notes: I was told by musicians, who played on this session, that
Frank was in tears
listening to the final playback of "When Your Lover Has Gone."
Note: Frank loved this song. He sang it for more
than 40 years. He always accorded the song
the greatest respect in his concert and club
performances.

IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS
Frank Sinatra ( 1-12" )
Capitol W 581
A Frank Sinatra album is good sales-news
to the dealer and this is one of his best. The
singer is still very hot with the public -- as the
result of his continued success in the movies
and new-found popularity on TV and for some
reason he seems to pack more sales-punch
on LP than he does with singles. He warbles
15 memorable standards, plus the title tune
( written expressly for the album ) with poignancy
and feeling, ranging in mood from the haunting
"When Your Lover Has Gone" to the wistful "I'll
Be Around," "Dancing On The Ceiling," "This Love
Of Mine" and "I Get Along Without You Very Well."
Billboard
May 14, 1955
note: Sinatra's finest album was released by Capitol
on April 15,1955. Billboard Top LP list had it charting
at #2 for 18 consecutive weeks. Nelson Riddle's goal,
in writing charts for Frank back then, was to achieve
a timeless quality that would endure for ever. Years
later he told George Robert, bass trombonist on many
sessions with Nelson and Frank, that he felt that had
happened with his work on "Wee Small Hours."
In my interviews with musicians, arrangers,
songwriters, "Wee Small . . ." is always the album
they rank as Frank's greatest. Neal Hefti, Al Porcino,
Vince DeRosa, Teddy Randazzo and others not only
sang the praises for this monumental work but told
me how many copies they wore out through the years.
According to George Jacobs, Frank referred to it as
the "Ava album." From that tumultuous relationship,
the artist channeled his agony into a masterwork
that explored the desolation and despair of unrequited
love. He sang each of the marvelous 16 songs with
a shattering honesty that will always resonant with
anyone who comes upon this remarkable work.

AFRS chose Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love"
from the 1-15-50 Light Up Time. Dorothy was not on the 2-17
show, so Frank did a brief skit with Jeff Alexander. Before
singing "None But The Lonely Heart," Frank declared that
it was one of the greatest songs ever written. Porter's
classic followed.

Ed O'Brien:
This was the last show of Frank's engagement. Pat Henry
had been Frank's opening act at many venues since 1958.
He seemed fine after this show and went to his room in the
wee hours. A hotel employee discovered Henry's body later
that morning. Sinatra was so shocked he did not immediately
release a statement or comment on his long time friend's passing.
