First, what version of Sibelius are you using? If you’re using 5.25, and you
are able to do so, I would strongly recommend upgrading to the 2020 release
with vastly improved MIDI import functionality. I would also recommend that you
join the WhatsApp Sibelius group and the mailing list which is forming on
Google groups. You are more likely to get the answers you need from those
resources.

Hi,
I am a pianist first and a composer only second, so I mostly use Sib Access
to help me learn piano pieces for performance.
I need some help figuring out how to import a midi file of a piano piece
successfully into Sibelius. The two times I have tried it, Sibelius has put
every voice onto a separate treble clef staff, instead of naturally what you
want for piano music of two staves only with multiple voices per staff if
needed, and of course it would be nice to have the clefs right and not have
everything in the treble staff.
When you try to open a midi file it seems to bring you to a dialog box with
some preferences you toggle on or off. It sure seems like the very first one
which as I recall is something about whether each voice should be on a
separate staff is exactly my problem but I have tried toggling it both ways
and it makes no difference. If any of you can either confirm you've had
similar experiences or can teach me what I need to do, that would be great. I
am not finding much .mxl files online of classical compositions, but more
midi files so if I could get this figured out it would help.
Michael
