This is something strictly related to MoM tool like Momentum, EMX, Q3D etc.
They just inject current on pin and they do not need to have any specific
reference...
They are integral equation and compute current on metal... then extrapolate
the wave propagation on medium with Greenâs function
These tools compute the partial self inductance, so the reference or return
path is not mandatory for your port
Other tools like HFSS, ADS FEM , CST etc. require a reference since they
apply a differential Wave injection between the signal and its reference
These tools compute the loop inductance
