Jaya, The charateristic impedance defines the (l/c)raised to 1/2 ratio of the line per unit length. The input impedance of the line is what you get looking into the line when its terminated by a load which could vary from 0 to infinity resistive/reactive. When you have a termination of Zo at the load end , the i/p impedance is Zo too.......in all other cases the line modifies the impedance as per the transmission line eq: that you will find in books. However for multiples of lambda/2 of line length you will find the input impedance the same as the terminating impedance.
