If you are just doing point-to-point Ethernet within a box, then you may be able to use capacitors. The correct way to do it varies depending on which PHY you are using. Several PHY manufacturers have app notes on how to connect up their part using just capacitors.=20 If you go out of your box, however, then you will definitely have lots of issues to deal with, as mentioned earlier. -tom -----Original Message----- From: si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Tang, George Sent: Monday, February 27, 2006 3:40 PM To: glenchen@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; si-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [SI-LIST] Re: Why do we use transformer for DC blocking in ethernet connection ? A transformer does a lot more than DC blocking. It blocks common mode signals (power / ground noise), matches impedances, provides ground isolation, blocks lighting surges, and enforces a balanced differential driver to reduce EMI. It would be VERY DIFFICULT for a capacitor to do all that. =3D20 George Tang=3D20 LSI Logic=3D20 -----Original Message----- From: si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of glenchen@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2006 9:13 AM To: si-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [SI-LIST] Why do we use transformer for DC blocking in ethernet connection ? Hi , all members of si-list , In ethernet connection , we use transformer for DC blocking . While in audio applications or other high speed links , we use capacit for DC blocking . Can we use capacitor for DC blocking in ethernet connection ? Why ? What is the difference between using transformer and using capacitor for DC blocking ? I am very appreciated if anyone can give me the answer . - Glen Chen SynerChip Tech . ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List FAQ wiki page is located at: http://si-list.org/wiki/wiki.pl?Si-List_FAQ List technical documents are available at: http://www.si-list.org List archives are viewable at: =3D20 //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list or at our remote archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/si-list/messages Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu =3D20 ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List FAQ wiki page is located at: http://si-list.org/wiki/wiki.pl?Si-List_FAQ List technical documents are available at: http://www.si-list.org List archives are viewable at: =20 //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list or at our remote archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/si-list/messages Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu =20 ------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from si-list: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field or to administer your membership from a web page, go to: //www.freelists.org/webpage/si-list For help: si-list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'help' in the Subject field List FAQ wiki page is located at: http://si-list.org/wiki/wiki.pl?Si-List_FAQ List technical documents are available at: http://www.si-list.org List archives are viewable at: //www.freelists.org/archives/si-list or at our remote archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/si-list/messages Old (prior to June 6, 2001) list archives are viewable at: http://www.qsl.net/wb6tpu
