Thin oxides leak.  Real thin oxides leak a lot.  This problem has also hit 
FPGAs and CPLDs.

I wouldn't totally forget the idea, but you do have to pay attention and 
check the fine print in the data sheets.

A few vendors are targeting the battery powered market.  Think cell phones.  
It's an interesting balance between performance when active and leakage when 
inactive.

How much memory and/or CPU do you need?  If your problem will fit into an ARM 
class system, there are multiple choices, including some/many with RAM and 
Flash on chip.
