AMD does tells no lies to interviewees and they are extremely honest over the phone. I see nothing wrong with a little poetry coming from a person who really believes in what he does. Actually it is a little refreshing. Lighten up. If you knew Jonathan at all you would appreciate the love and work that went into his message. take care all, jon -----Original Message----- From: si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Ken Cantrell Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2003 8:31 AM To: james.f.peterson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; dpriyawrat@xxxxxxxxx; si-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [SI-LIST] Re: Signal Integrity Manager Position at AMD -- Austin, TX All, As a manager, I find it hard to believe that one cannot post a specific job, and interview and hire for that same position. I suggest that Dowling take his incoherent ramblings elsewhere, instead of impuning the integrity of the list. I believe it is the responsibility of the engineer conducting the interview to lead this. Next time you interview an engineer for a position at your company, tell them about the good things (absolutely), but also the bad or ordinary, and try to give them a realistic view of what they can expect when/if they start working there. The last thing you want is an engineer who moved his or her family 2000 miles, just started working a month ago, and is miserable. You've done this person and your company a disservice. -----Original Message----- From: Priyawrat Dewasthalee [mailto:dpriyawrat@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 11:07 PM To: si-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [SI-LIST] Re: Signal Integrity Manager Position at AMD -- Austin, TX Thanks Ray/ Dear all, A gentle reminder ----------------- About three years ago, Jonathan Dowling had put a similar mail for a junior SI position on the list to which I had applied. I was subsequently interviewed and selected by him for the same. When I left my job in India and joined AMD at Austin, on the very first day he told me - 1. I will not be working in the SI related work with him, 2. he doesn't have the authority to change this decision as he is not a manager, and 3. he is still in the process of gathering the "critical mass". I ended up working on the board level characterization of the system bus on the then new Athelon 1GHz processor. And although I enjoyed (in fact feel rewarded) working with guys like Chris Tressler, Jaime Juarez et al, that was not what I intended to make my career in. I left AMD in 3 months and returned to India. I refused all offers from AMD-HR immediately after that. To his credit, Jonathan raised this issue time and again at informal luncheons (and perhaps at official levels). There are several other characters associated with this episode but the core of the matter is as above. To date, I do not doubt Jonathan's intent and he remains a respect worthy guy for me. Looking back, it is obvious to me that Jonathan got carried away while putting up the ad when he was not a manager. I in turn blundered by jumping without checking out all the necessary facts. "Hey man, you know what! I am joining AMD!!" :) That was a mistake we both made. Of course, I ended up paying a heavy price for/since that mistake - the next hiring manager, naturally, discredits me and not AMD for a short stint. The episode has left me skeptical if not paranoid. I have learnt my lessons, and thus am disappointed to see this fresh advert from Jonathan/AMD with all its grandeur. The intent of this mail is not to complain or something. I hope this e-mail helps in bringing both, the advertisers and the respondents, back to reality and hopefully prevents further casualties. I am also putting an end to this thread from my side.
