Aaron,

The external resistor is used as a reference by the device to periodically
adjust the drive strength of the output buffer. This results in less drive
strength variation over the PVT range.

Since QDR busses are uni-directional, parallel termination at one end of the
line is the most common scheme used.
Depending on the data rate, the read bus may need to be doubly terminated.

Unterminated operation may be possible for point-to-point configurations.

Series terminations are unlikely to be useful.
