Ray, at 622mbps, the rise time is likely in the neighborhood of 300ps or 
so.  In 300ps, how far do you think you can go before transmission line 
effects are significant?  How much timing budget can you sacrifice to 
reflections?

As to microstrip, the vendor is probably concerned about via stubs.
