Thank Dan and Jim for the announcement and discussions. I will share some of my own experience and perspective as a university professor. We need to spend some time working on the Green's functions and some similar fundamental research work as we should in academia; however, I fully support getting industry involvement into the IEEE symposium. To us, we benefited a lot over the years by working tightly with industry. We feel this is especially important in our fields of Signal/Power Integrity and EMC. We wouldn't learn about the real-world problems and conduct relevant research without our industry partners. Making the IEEE symposium a venue for the industry and academia coming together will greatly benefit university research, students, and their future employers from our side of the view. Yes, the motivation of this program is to "transform" modern IEEE conference to accommodate new changes in electronic industry. It is funny that you mentioned Green's function which was my Ph.D. topic two decades ago. Now, my work is more focused on applications. There is so much stuff that SI/PI engineers can contribute in IC or system design and also learn each other from experience. We need a conference to share those experiences (of course, without disclosing company trade secrets). It is indeed win-win for both engineers and companies even including research institutions including universities. It would nice to hear more opinions from others also. I hope we are not the only ones thinking this way :). When most people think of an IEEE publication they think of academia. So a paper on a novel Greens function expansion of a differential via which results in a 10:1 computation time reduction over brute force FDTD methods would be a classic IEEE SI paper. It's also well suited for the academic community as the math is rigorous. Not to say that industry experts can't handle the math but this type of research is generally not done in industry. At least here at Samtec we are not planning to develop any Greens function expansions of differential vias. The Industry Papers Track is an acknowledgement by the IEEE that measurements, tolerance issues, material characteristics, manufacturing tradeoffs and even cost are part of the SI engineering discipline. In other words, the problems that SI engineers deal with every day are indeed "worthy" of publication, in fact they are often the most well attended papers because other engineers can relate to it. Sure, all your competitors will attend your paper but so will a few customers. I encourage folks on this list to at least consider the benefits of participating. Speaking from experience, preparing and presenting a paper makes you realize how little you really know. Or maybe phrased another way, you find out that others are working in the same field as you and maybe they have already considered alternate approaches. In some cases you actually help someone out and maybe advance our discipline. I find it motivating, humbling and rewarding all at the same time. On behalf of the EMC/SIPI technical program committee, we are very pleased to announce a new technical program for SI/PI engineers and researchers: Industry Papers track. Industry Papers track provides a unique opportunity to share experiences and ideas among SI/PI engineers and researchers within the renowned IEEE conference environment. Paper acceptance is based on abstract submission only. Upon acceptance, the final manuscript, however, must follow the regular EMC paper format. Please refer to the Call for Industry Papers document for details. The deadline for submission is October 19, 2014. The 2015 IEEE Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility and Signal Integrity will be held in Santa Clara, CA, from March 15 to 21. We invite you to submit an abstract for this exciting conference and program. We look forward to meeting you at the heart of Silicon Valley in 2015. Please don't hesitate to contact us, if you have any questions.
