The temperature does go back up...that's why you have to take it more than
once a day. It drops way down about 12 hours before whelping, supposedly, then
goes back up to normal. If you don't catch it at the right time, they can
surprise you.
Because of this, I never found the temperature taking to be a good enough
indication. On the other hand, if you are able to stick around and just wait,
there's really no need to take temps. At least, that's what I've always
found.........
