My first champion, group winning bitch was out of a long coat bitch. Yes you can breed your coated bitch to a male that doesn't carry the coat factor, but I believe the puppies would then have a possiblity of carrring the coat factor themselves. So this would be something you would have to factor into your decision. I personally wouldn't think twice about keeping a long coat for breeding, if that was pick of the litter and had a great pedigree.
