[ SHOWGSD-L ] troops in Iraq

Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive of our human and canine troops
in Iraq. The 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia is
preparing to deploy 25,000+ soldiers in early 2005 for a period of 12-18
months. My
husband will be sending about 125 soldiers from his battalion, but he will
not be deploying with them at this time (much to his distress...he hates
having
"his" guys go and not go himself).
There have been some great ideas for things to send to our troops. Some of
the things that they would like are items to give to the local population.
Some people have made up "gift bags" for the Iraqi kids. In a ziploc bag they
include some of the following: crayons, pencils, pens, paper, notebooks,
bandaids, chapstick, candy, toys from fast food restaurants, small stuffed
animals, individual servings of hot chocolate, dried koolaid, dried
applejuice,
kleenex, etc..
The "lessons learned" idea behind this is that if we (the U.S. troops) go
into the neighborhoods giving gifts it wins over the local populace and they
are more likely to try to protect our soldiers as well.
We (my husband's unit) do not currently have any soldiers in Iraq but I will
be letting you know when they deploy so I just wanted to give everyone a
"heads up" if they wanted to start getting stuff together.
ALSO, the AT&T phone cards work in Iraq. Currently, NONE of the other cards
can be used there. PLEASE buy & send AT&T cards to the troops. They do get
a free 10 minute "morale" call every 2 weeks, but any other calls are from
their own pocket.
