It could also be pointed out that some groups have never had a Westminster
winner. It is worthy to note, as Evan said, that in the two times a Herding
group has won, a German Shepherd has done it. The judges both said she was so
close to the standard, perfectly conditioned and presented. She had that
unmistakable look, hard to define, that makes her stand out. That doesn't
sound to me like an inferior specimen of a dog.

This is an interesting article, but ignores the fact that form follows
function.
The author does not recognize that the "standard" is to make sure the German
shepherd is bred in conformation to follow it's function. In other words,
when temperament was put at the front of our standard, it was to recognize
how important that factor is. Or, the gait described in the standard is to
allow the dog to function at the breed's peak in herding sheep all day.
Then the author makes a serious error, in using Rumor to say what a terrible
example of our breed she is.
There is no excuse for ignorance, and in reading someone's opinions, such as
these, we must understand that it is but an opinion. Others have as much
right to be wrong, as we do to be right.
We, and most all breeders, breed to improve the breed. We try to have better
examples of the breed with each litter. We are doing great, and after just
over 100 years of the German shepherd we should be, and are proud to see
Rumor in the ring.
It is not the win, but the quality that we exalt. The win is but a record of
what can be done.
And, the only two herding dogs to win the Best In Show at Westminster, were
both German shepherds.
We should all stand proud of our breed and what we have accomplished, and
understand that some people enjoy displaying their ignorance. We enjoy
knowing and recognizing it.
