OK - I want to chime in also - I just (2 months ago)bred THREE bitches all
in the same week. One was done with frozen semen, and the other two were
with freshed chilled, all three done transcervical (sp.?) and by a supposed
top repro vet, with lots of progesterone tests and lots of $$$$$$ (did you
know it costs $600. to ship frozen semen ???) I had all three x-rayed today,
and only the one that was done with frozen semen has puppies in her belly.
YEA !!!! Sel.Exc.CH Karizma's Betsy von Loar Kaleef is in whelp to GV CH
Scher-Los Rogue of Karizma. Puppies due next week. What happened to the
other two ??? Maybe the freshed chilled collection wasn't that great,
and/or the actual insemination timing wasn't great. Better luck next time .
. . Of course I am disappointed, but also relieved - LOL - 3 litters in one
week ?????

Same results for me Patrick...spent thousands of dollars trying to do
AIs....finally I gave up and gave my dog's sperm away....thereby saving me
thousands of dollars in the future.....life is like

I wish we could compile these letters and get them to a Veterinary
publication, might be interesting reading for the young vets coming up.
Probably wouldn't do any good but this is really frustrating. Â You have all
spoken for me and my experience as well. Â I have just given up on anything
artificial. Â I will only do natural breedings now after throwing thousands
at A.I.s, implants, etc. which of course really limits what I can breed to.
And as you guys said even that is an ordeal trying to get a progesterone
done and get accurate results back in some sort of timely manner. Â I have
considered buying a centrifuge, microscope, etc. and setting up a little lab
in my house. Â (I used to be a lab tech.) Â I can see myself driving a bitch
to the mid-west, south-east, north-west or further soon to get a natural
breeding and that is ridiculous in 2012. Â How long have they been doing AIs
for cattle and horses and yet here we sit. Â I know, I know now ten people
are going to write in telling me how I must be doing it wrong because they
produce puppies artificially all the time. Â Come on over! Â Show Me! Â Love
to
be shown where I am screwing up! Â I have attempted to do A.I.s with my
bitches over a twenty year period with dogs from all over the country and
NEVER produced a pup, not one. Â I have sat in back yards, parks, dog show
grounds, and canine reproduction clinics with my bitches and some of the
best producing dogs and their top winning, knowledgeable owners and have
NEVER PRODUCED a pup through artificial insemination. Â I have spent untold
hours (and thousands of dollars) on the phone with vets and reproduction
specialists from the mid west to the west coast. Â I have a huge stack of
"Fresh Express" FedEx boxes in my garage. Â If anyone can think of a use for
them let me know.

Boy, does this ring home! Â I hope you are all able to find a replacement.
My super vet only practices now every so often. Â His practice is still on
his property, but more often than not, he's off seeing the world. Â Reliable
for 25 years, we worked so well together often just over the phone (he is an
hours drive), and then pick up a prescription at the pharmacy. Â He used to
pack me up with meds to have on hand so he could prescribe over the phone.
He was a large and small animal Vet, hadn't bought into the computer age and
did everything on paper which kept cost down.. Â a real country Vet who knew
and did it all. Â Artificial insemination? Â No problem.. Â cows, horses and
dogs.. Â easy peasy. Â Your bill in the mail or on account, which ever was
easiest. Â He's got new Vets in there, and while they have obviously been
directed by my Vet, there has been an obvious jump in Veterinary prices.
Double in most cases. Â If I come in and he's there.. he'll say "Oh it's
you!
I'll take th
is patient!" Â But, that has happened only a few times in the last year or
so. Â So.. Â I just decided to give up breeding. Â Without his support, it's
too risky and far too expensive a hobby for me at this point in my life.

Like Kathy our 'ace' Â reproductive Vet retired a couple of years ago. Â Â
He
almost apologized
to us as he knew how important he was to us. Â I told him he had no right
to
retire before we
were through breeding. Â ( besides he is younger than us!! ) ........but he
did anyway...<G>
I swear it is like losing a much trusted and loved family Doctor!!!
It has been a struggle..... we have run upon many things similar to what
Kathy descirbes in
what some Vets require. Â Â It has taken literally three different Vets to
replace the one.....and
the three together don't come close to his availability and capability and
the trust between us.
sigh.........
Most of us know the progesterone numbers, know the drill as well as most
Vets, Â and handle
A.I.'s and natural breedings just fine, Â and can handle most of it
ourselves
anyway.
(.... without knowing how many "folds" are in the vaginal lining our whole
life...... )

We cannot however run a progesterone test as accurate as the Labs, Â and we
need that
before investing in the huge cost of breeding with fresh chilled or frozen
semen. Â It's basically
simple. Â Even a Vet Tech can draw the blood for the test to be sent to the
Lab for results, and
then call you to let you know the numbers.
Anything else is fluff and..............KA-CHING!!

Here's the scary thing...I know what I want, I understand progesterone
timing, I know when to
breed a bitch depending on if we are doing fresh, Â chilled, frozen etc. Â
AND
still there were
screw ups with the labs  (plural!).  I did what I thought was my due
diligence by carefully
interviewing a new-to-me vet.
What about the 1st or 2nd or 3rd time breeder who  get taken by all this
nonsense?????
Vaginal folds?????? VAGINAL FOLDS??????? Â Arrrrgggghhhhh! Â I'm still
upset!!!
