AMEN!!!!!!! As a retired teacher, I totally agree!! One of my students left for three weeks to go to South Africa with his parents to visit his sister who was posted there. Mine was a newspaper production class, and while he could make up missed assignments, he could not make up the missed production time. His grade dropped from an A to a B. I had told him his grade might be affected, and I had also given him my blessing to go. Less than a year later, his sister was killed in the Beirut embassy bombing. That trip to Africa was the last time he saw her, and I am eternally grateful that I encouraged him to go. Of course I think that education is important, but education doesn't only happen in classrooms. And like Penny, I'm dismayed at what No Child Left Behind has done to what I consider "education." Fran Henry Denver > I respectfully disagree. I am preparing kids for LIFE; unfortunately, > in NY standardized tests seem to be taking over. I teach kids--I > totally disagree with "cookie cutter education"--I'm teaching them > that each and every one of them is unique--they are NOT the same and > should not be taught as such. > Off my soap box. ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2007.
