Let me try to make it simple so I can understand.
A dog carries two genes for color. If one is sable, they can produce sable
or whatever the other gene is, as each parent provides one color gene. Since
sable is dominant, if one of the genes is sable, that is how the puppy will
appear.
Now, if both parents have one sable gene, and one black and tan gene, they
will appear sable, and will provide one gene to each puppy. If both or either
parent has the double sable gene, then all puppies have to have at least one
sable gene, so they will all appear sable. If one of the parents has a
black and tan, the puppies could also carry a black and tan gene. Then,
depending on what they carry, they would produce the same color system.
Our first bitch, a Ghengis granddaughter, had the double sable gene. Every
litter we had from her had to be, (and was) all sables. From her daughters we
did get some black and tans, since we bred her to black and tan males.
Make sense? Not to me. But then again, I don't need to understand.
