[ SHOWGSD-L ] re long coats

I think I like it, as I love long coats, but then are we not setting a  
president by establishing a class for a fault? I can see where this might  
go - a class for whites, a class for missing teeth, etc.....
I am  somewhat ambivalent at this point. While I usually opt for inclusion 
and  expansion, the standard is there to narrow the choices to that which 
is, 
the  best representative of the breed. Maybe that is still the best course 
to  
follow. I still thinking, which many will scoff at!

a long coat is a fault.  a white is a DQ under the standard.   there's a 
huge difference.
 
i think helen is so right re the coats.  there seems to be such a huge  
clamor these days about the coat factor - as if being a coat is some  horrible 
ill that might befall a pup.  we NEED coats in our breed to  maintain 
correct coats and beautiful breed type.  ann's bitch is a  wonderful example.  
piper hill's kodachrome was another.  personally,  i have no issue breeding to 
a dog who carries the coat factor.  i do,  however, have serious issues when 
it comes to breeding to a dog who has a good  potential of passing on the 
propensity for gastric B/T, mesenteric torsion,  mega, praa etc. perhaps, if 
we are going to worry about breeding stock, that's  where are worries should 
be directed.
