Dave has nailed it in his usual calming voice to steady our frustration.
Thanks Dave.
We should all realize we are ALL willing to do about anything to solve
every problem in this Breed....but we can't even do that with MANKIND
at this point...or we would solve our own problems too. <G>
A GSD that is not in a kennel and has some kind of work or training is
definitely a happier dog, and therefore a healthier dog than one left
in a kennel day after day.
If nothing else...we should ALL KNOW THAT!!
We all have different interests within this Breed and while it seems to
frustrate some when we don't do it ALL...what really matters once again
IS THE STANDARD. As long as we are adhering to the Standard it really
should 'cover' all aspects and abilities of this versatile Breed.
THAT should be OUR Standard!
FIRST...it IS A HERDING BREED. Bite work or SchH work is not the the first
venue that matters to many of us. That does not mean the dogs are weak or
fearful or not trainable...IF we are truly paying attention to our STANDARD!
They should be intelligent, steady, watchful, fearless, confident, athletic
and powerful...and CAPABLE of whatever we want or are capable of teaching
them...and WILLING to please us and work for us.
Some of us love a truly beautiful, athletic, correct ground covering GSD
and that is what we look for in our puppies...but we also must be mindful
of all the other important sound working qualities in our dogs/ pups.
Some care more for the training aspects of the sport of GSD, some more for
the handling, some prefer to judge, some of us are breeders and some
prefer to just exhibit a dog no matter who bred it. The Breed is very
versatile...let's also except that many of us are not as versatile as our
Breed, and some can't or won't train, can't or won't show, can't or won't
Breed, can't or won't judge..or can't handle.
FIRST...PAY ATTENTION TO THE STANDARD ..all of it...from good feet to sound
intelligent biddable dogs that can physically do everything we or anyone
can ask of it. Often they are more capable of different venues than WE ARE!
.....Think of it as a Quarter Horse and what it is bred for.
Now I LOVE Quarter Horses. They are bred for great speed up to 1/4 mile,
stopping on a dime, herding cattle, roping horses...etc...and are used in
the basic Western venue from barrel racing to calf roping.
Some LOVE the Quarter Horse for its look...which fulfills a basic working
purpose. Doesn't mean EVERYONE MUST rope calves, barrel race, herd cattle
with them and only breed them for exactly that purpose... or it is not a
good
Quarter Horse!!! Some just want one to own, to ride just for pleasure, or
ride in Parades, to breed, to show, or to compete or actually 'WORK' for
it's original purpose. Don't condemn the horse for what the owner does or
does not do!!!
As long as it is easily recognized as a Quarter Horse, can do exactly what
it was bred for..is bred correctly.......well....don't shoot the horse! <G>

........If our goal is only to eliminate all health issues, we are going
to die of frustration and disillusionment.
..............I love to go to shows, compete with the big boys and
occasionally win a show or two. I cannot prove that my dogs are better nor
will I accept that they are worse. What I do know, is that they are mine, I
love them and that's enough. I enjoy this crazy group of people who breed
and show in the conformation world. They are diverse, I disagree with many
of them on some things and it doesn't matter when we are at the show. It is
a game we play and a hobby that occupies our time and takes away most of our
money. What could be better than that?

I am not sure there is an issue here worth arguing about, even though I do
enjoy a good argument occasionally. People are different and have different
interests. They select dogs that fit their interests. Although we like to
think it is about the dogs, it may well be primarily about we who hold the
leash. Is it possible that our differing perspectives and perceptions can
garner 'facts' to prove our points and make us feel right, but in the end
are just that - our perspectives and perceptions - neither right nor wrong,
just ardently believed by us? I suspect that most of our discussions can be
transcended by relaxing in that possibility. Conformation dogs are not
everyone's cup of tea, but they are for some. So we play our game and have
fun and there is nothing wrong with that. Dave

Ok, first off I am not putting down breeders that care about the health and
temperament of their dogs.
I am not getting my information just from books and internet websites but
actually have known people with the bloodlines of these dogs throughout the
years.  You see even though I am not a breeder myself I have had many
friends that were and family members that also were.
Afterall my father knew Lloyd Brackett personally as he lived near Allegan
too and he also owned German Shepherds. I still know many caring breeders of
German Shepherd Dogs some show their dogs, some don't as they own working
GSD's.
Sorry you and others take this personal as it is not meant to be.

To stop rumors as most are stating is surfacing why not make facts avaliable
to others of not having or having the health issues in the dogs they breed.
The breeders I know and deal with do the testing available and let others
know what is in their lines so not to pass it on further. Theresa
