Yes. I recently went through a situation w/ an slightly older gal (not
mine, I was on the stud dog end), who it turns out did not ovulate. For
anyone
who does timing, you'll know that at 2+ the LH surge begins and although most
check again, you figure breed in 3-4 days. (It is actually the LH surge and
NOT progesterone that gets the stud dog interested). Generally you need 5
for ovulation, figure 2-3 days for the eggs to ripen to where they can be
fertilized, but unless you've been testing right along, you don't know how
quickly
a gal has come up or just when she hit a 5, so doing a natural breeding you
would breed on a 5 (and you may be a day early), and then breed 2 days later
(unless you are using chilled, you'd wait 2 days or for frozen until the very
high teens even 20).

Following ovulation, progesterone spikes, then levels off.

Well, anyway, this gal got to 4.3, then back down and stayed in the 2ish
range, finally dropping to below 1. You never would have suspected from the
behavior of both the bitch (receptive) or the dog (interested), and without
continued testing we never would have known she didn't ovulate. (It got me to
thinking how many times bitches might be bred, things may appear normal, but
there are no puppies and either the stud dog gets blamed and/or the bitch is
fed
handfuls of antibiotics the next season because who-knows-what is blamed.)

OK next bitch. Completed testing, everything worked like clockwork BUT
several days later she was still looking for her man <G>. I ran her in for a
progesterone test to verify she had ovulated, and she had, (she just liked her
man <G>).

There is another reason to do progesterone timing w/ a bitch with a history
of unsuccessful pregnancy/reabsorbing. If progesterone drops below 3.5
during pregnancy, the bitch will not maintain her pregnancy and will reabsorb,
or
if she's far enough along, will abort. Ever have a bitch who looks pregnant
and then all of a sudden she doesn't and you have no puppies? Now you get
into the whole "what's right" thing about intervening. If you think this is
due
to advancing age and NOT a genetic/familial issue, you can
monitor/supplement progesterone during the last half of the pregnancy.

Gosh I wish I didn't know this stuff! Remember when you were a kid and one
neighbor's dog courted another neighbor's dog and 9 weeks later you were over
their house looking at furry babies??????

My mother, (bless her!), known for her pithy comments, usually has a few
choice words when I am in the middle of doggy reproductive nonsense. "Dogs
used
to do it in the street dear, all by themselves without help. I don't know
why you and your friends make such an issue of it!" I remember speaking to
her when the second girl mentioned above was screaming for her man, days after
she shouldn't have been receptive and changing my plans for that day to
include a trip to the vet for a progesterone test. "Just let them 'do it'
hon,
Mom said. Why do you need to have that vet take more blood?" We went to the
vet, lol.

Hello,

Do any of you guys do progesterone testing after having bred a bitch. If
so, when do you test? Thanks.

Diane
