This is something that should always be on hand, as well as calcium. Talk to your vet about how to give the shots, either in the muscle or under the skin. Basically under the skin has a "smoother" effect...easier build up to a contraction ect. Directly into a muscle works "harder" .... a hard and fast contraction. I almost never give pit directly into a muscle for that reason. Calcium ( in a ringers type solution with dextrose) is a much better tool for keeping deliveries moving along. This too is given under the skin. Oxytocin or "pit" can also be used to stimulate milk....and as said before, it should never be used before the puppies arrive, nor if a puppy is in the birth canal. I have a friend who's vet says to use pit if your not seeing a puppy delivered every 20 minutes. I disagree with this for shepherds. My friend has had many puppies born dead and I think its because they separate to soon from the uterine wall and die until they are actually born. On the other hand I have another friend who has poodles and its not unusual for her to have a litter of 5 born in an hour, so for a dog like that a pit shot after 20 minutes probably does deliver puppies safely.....can us shepherd people imagine that? 5 puppies in an hour!
