I was fifteen when I met him. He and Joanne were not yet married but they were
both backstage when my parents took me to meet their friend Eli Wallach. He was
playing on Broadway in THE COLD WIND AND THE WARM. He and his wife Anne Jackson
the redhead were very friendly with Paul and Joanne. Eli had slept on our couch
many times when he was a struggling young actor. My parents were very freindly
with his brother Sam. Newman knocked me out. Its one thing to see those
gorgeous blue eyes on a movie screen and another to see them in person. I think
the great tragedy in his life was the loss of his only son. He never talked
about it. The Theater World has lost an Icon. I think the scene that I shall
always remember was in HUD wth Patricia Neal. One of the sexiest scenes ever
made in the movies.
