Hi Molly, stay tuned. I for one have not given up on the checklist idea. I am encouraged that you have been open minded in this discussion(remember when you thought your parents were argueing but they told you it was just a "discussion") and have seen the potential to have a checklist that is agnostic(Ed Hill will need to look this up in the dictionary)with regard to personal agenda's but reflective of the greater good. I remain optimistic that we will have changes in the right direction(but i'm still holding onto my "telecom" stocks from the late 90's so don't count on my optimism)<G>. There have been several posts suggesting the reason so many people are being petitioned this year is to keep the membership happy, as though the nominating committee could care less about the membership. I so strongly disagree with this thought process, and I will explain why. We all have our buddies who we think would do a good job for us, then we there are some that will simply support what we think our individual wants are. But for the most part it comes down to the attitude "all about me". I think this is where we are steering the boat the wrong way, and exercising a control that is not always healthy. Presently, there are 2 groups of 7 directors who come on for 2 year turns, staggering the years on and off 1 group from 2003-2005 (who are on the way out) and another from 2004-2006, who have 1 year left on the board. With the rest of our board, including the Pres, we have 19. And what I am about to suggest is not about mud slinging, pointing fingers or criticism. I believe the board works very hard for all of us and gives so much of themselves for our breed. But......if you have a group of members who are pushing for the national to be central, mid country year after year, would it make sense to have a good stack of centrally located board members? If you want it to rotate throughout the country, I would think the membership would want to see members from every point far and wide. Currently, there is a fairly heavy central group on the board, and again, I am not suggesting they are there to be self serving, but still can serve a purpose for the "wants this, or wants that". Then the outer fringes feel left out and disgruntled at choices made. Just a few days ago there was a lengthy discussion about a checklist for national sites. Finally Bill Basu put a message on pushing for a checklist to be formalized by the board, challenging a board member to take it on for the next board meeting. Know what, no one suggested to take it on after all the concern for a checklist. Why? It takes away the right to vote just as you please, instead of specific laid out criteria, that will inhibit right to choice. Kathy Gray suggested a few days ago in regards to nationals that they should rotate in and out of the 9 futurity regions. Not such a terrible idea, but might be a bit cumbersome and expensive to do but again, could be workable if all the criteria were met for sites. I want to go one step further that would solve some of the nominating committee problems, members satisfaction and overall feeling of inclusion, not exclusion. I think our bylaws and officers of the board need to be revamped. We have 9 futurity regions.....I strongly feel there should be a director on our board from each region. Have nominated members from each region, have petitions from those regions, and let the regions vote on who they want for their representation. Then with all things being equal, let the chips fall where they may. When a region has a problem and or complaint, let them go to their own elected official. It is the way all democratic government is set up.....why do we not have this for ourselves? Everyone keeps saying perhaps it is time for a change. I challenge the board to look at this idea and explain to the membership why this is not a viable way to get this national club national representation. Thanks for listening, at least I feel better.
