I feel it is a result of not knowing the purpose. The apostrophe is used to
contract,to take the place of letters or a word left out; it's---the i in is
is replaced by theapostrophe; in its ( its purpose ) there is nothing left
out. In dog's bowl, the apostrophetakes the place of has ( the dog has a bowl;
in dogs' bowls, the apostrophe takesthe place of have ( the dogs have bowls )
Plurals hardly ever use an apostrophe,only if there could be confusion without
it. Names do not use apostrophes for aplural connotation....Joneses, Bakers,
Moores, etc. And where doe one put theapostrophe ?Wherever you would put the
letters or word it replaces. Simple, ehe ?

It just seems to be the norm these days to insert an apostrophe in any
plural.......... so who's to blame...ineffective and/or incompetent
teachers, or lazy, inattentive students?
