With very young children, a good plan is to teach them to ask before petting,
HOW to pet (offer a hand for the dog to sniff), pet under the chin, not on the
top of the head, etc., what to do if approached by a strange dog or by a
threatening dog (DON'T RUN) -- and so forth. What seems to us as natural as
breathing may be entirely foreign to a child whose family has no dogs. Also
teach them offer a treat on a flat palm, not in little fingers.
