My opinion also. I have a low tolerance for "stupid" in vets. Vets that
prescribe antibiotics without cause (and as has been previously discussed,
Baytril is a doosy and it will kill the good bugs leaving the bitch susceptible
to pyo, a bitch can develop resistance to it, and they what if you REALLY need
it, etc., etc.), go on my "stupid vet list". Sorry Ed, but you're a smart
guy. If you are entrusting your bitch's care and forking over $$$ to a vet
that can't justify why she's doing something, find another vet. You're
entitled to answers and an explanation of her thought process.
BTW, there are times when the only honest answer a vet can give you is "I
don't know". I RESPECT that! If a vet and I are going to "guess" which way to
go with something, we'll do it together, talk about, hash out ideas. That's
fine! But to suggest a course of treatment in a way that suggests throwing
everything against the wall to see what sticks...no, that's NOT fine.
Ed, I really hope you have a litter after all of this, but if there is a
next time that a bitch misses and you're wondering why or what to do, (the
culture was fine, the sperm was viable, timing was right, etc.), I'd have the
bitch examined endoscopicaly to see if you are dealing with uterine cysts and
scaring.
If you feel the bitch is conceiving but not carrying the litter to term
(reabsorbing), you could check hormones during the term of her pregnancy, but
now
we open up a whole other can of worms. With things like low thyroid or
funky hormone levels that cause a bitch to either not conceive and/or reabsorb,
just how much intervention to we do knowing darn well IF we get a litter there
is the likelihood that we'll be dealing with the same things in the next
generation?
