I got a German import years ago from a service family who brought her over.
She was about 3 yrs old when I got her and her tail was short, it had been
amputated because she had mutilated it. Even that didn't stop her, she still
chased it and would make it bloody. It was an obsession, and she was raised
as a family (house) dog.

A friend of mine has a 3 year old GS that she rescued. He is a real nice
dog, but when he gets excited at all he starts chasing his tail and
biting it as
he chews on it and cries.The vet put him on Prozac but he still does it.

I had a dog who did this. He had been a kennel dog, but when we got
him, he became a house dog and I thought the problem would take care
of itself. It didn't. We bought BITTER APPLE and sprayed it on his
tail every few days. Bitter Apple tastes, well, bitter (LOL) and he
didn't like the taste. So he stopped chasing his tail, but he would
always look at it. I believe this problem is genetic in nature.
