..but the decisions
for tiny photos with lots of white space all around
I wasn't going to comment, since Tedi and I became life members, and now
only have to pay for one Review. But, I was there when the decision was to
make the Review 8 1/2 by 11, instead of half size as it was for years.
I may be mixing up times here, but this is how I remember it.
Lois had been the editor, and she used a company to do layout, and was
paying them. There was concern that she was the owner of that company, but as
I remember it, Lois donated her time as editor.
It was suggested we change the format the of the Review from the half size
to a normal magazine size, (except Reader's Digest). The main argument was
a full size page could have four pictures large enough to see, while a
smaller size could only have one. Also, it would be less expensive to
advertise in the larger size paper.
It was a hot debate, with some insisting no changes. Then Gary S was able
to help as his background is in printing, as was mine. My father owned
Globe Printing in Grand Rapids. We both knew printing was the same, but in the
smaller size you printed four pages on a sheet of paper, then cut it and
gathered it. My dad was great in visualizing how to lay that out, I had to
always draw it out and then picture it. Gary could also do it in his head.
Gary talked about the cost savings, and how much easier a standard size
would be to "lay out" and to print. It convinced me and the board, and we
were lucky to have his help. So we voted and changed it to the larger size.
Then Gail Sprock took over as editor and with her great background in
publishing, the were fortunate to have a talented editor. She was dedicated to
the Review, and it showed.
There was a brief time when we had to use a non shepherd person for our
editor, and the names and dogs were all mixed up, and after a number of
months, and it was a disaster. Then Susan took over. She did a great job, but
by then the number of paid advertisers, (members), dropped off
substantially. Printing costs went up.
When Liz took over the Red Book, she was able to negotiate great rates
with a printer, and also maintained great quality.
I don't know the new editor, but we have to give her a chance to get up to
speed, and listen to our concerns.
It is a big job to do the Review. We all have opinions and it is good to
voice them. But, times change and we need to accept that we will have to
adapt to them.
The board works hard to give us a quality product, and I expect they will
find a solution for us older members who don't have a magnifying glass.
