You know, glad you mentioned that. Even if I could pay for a handler for the
life of the show career of the dog, handlers are in short supply, and all of
the
well known folks take priority. It is a hard thing. As a thought, and I am
doing
this with a friend, newbies get together and help each other handle. You take
my dog in, I'll take yours.

Barbara,
First off Thank you for what you have said. Not being able to show my own
dogs, the thought of them being away and also financing has had a great
impact on how much showing I can do.
I entered the GSD world almost three years ago and have hit many walls when
it comes to conformation. It has been a very hard struggle. My first GSD
bitch I purchased was said by the breeder to be her best puppy and would do
great in the ring. Well I put her in the ring and I started being asked why
are you showing her? I only heard bad comments and no good comments. I later
found out that I was misled by the breeder. That in fact this bitch was one
of her least quality dogs that she just needed to get in a home. Then I got
two other females and one had bad hips and the other a bad elbow due to a
broken growth plate in her foot before I got her (so she will lose her front
leg). On top of that the ones that were show able, one was very lose in the
rear and when did clean up we fell on very hard times and could not afford
to go to any shows at the time. Then when I did want to show I was told I
should not show them myself so I advertised looking for people to show my
dogs and heard nothing. I have one 2 yr old bitch I would love to show but
it is finding handlers and also I need to try to stay in my area for now. I
also have now a 4 month old boy that I hope to start showing this fall and
hope to be able to find a handler for him. So since I was not having much
luck in finding handlers I have decided to start focusing on competition
obedience because at least that is something I can do.
With all that said there also is the fact of all the money I have been
shelling out in the price to getting the dogs, shipping, medical expenses
for all the ones that needed vet work I have not had the money to show and
of course like many others the economic problems we were all hit with made a
big difference.
The good thing is that my persistence and research has paid off and I do
have two furry children that I look forward to putting in the ring this fall
(even if I have to show him myself).

The era of conformation dogs is over..People are aware of the showing of
dogs and do not want to deal with giving their beloved dog to a
handler..Then for some first a trainer..Years ago the owners went to
training classes worked with their dogs conditioned them groomed them..They
only had to go to the show with the dog and hand it to the handler for the
class..NOW IT IS A BIG PROJECT..The dog h as to race around the ring fast
faster..Then in comes your handler with his own dog and beats
you????Shepherds are selling most want a sound pet..They go to agility
sheepherding and have fun..The german shows are drawing very large entries
and the membership is also huge..This is the way it has been going the last
few years..Maybe we should get to gether and see why???The breed originated
from Germany and many feel that the Germans and their dogs are what we
should be striving for???The entries are almost non existant for our shows
and our Nationals are way down..The people buying ou
r dogs are letting us know they do not want American show dogs..They are
buying German ..Maybe we should start asking ourselfs WHY??????Barbara
