My husband is the superintendant of a large water department. Next year 30 years. He has numerous certifications. He does agree with your statement on the garden hose. He says the hoses do have lead in them but very small amounts. An older hose is safer as the lead has disapated some what. When they hook up people to temperary lines they only use potable water hoses. He said he does not worry about the dogs being watered with a regular hose but if you are concerned Ace Hardware sells potable water hose for around $35-$40 for a 50ft roll.
