you won't know but if she has progeny, she didn't bleed during the whelping in excess....and after a heat cycle, litter and so on her numbers would go UP so you probably would not know. i find it hard to believe she had an issue and had whelped pups. now the mode of transmission too will be a factor, so i guess i'd test them to be sure they are ok and let it go. not much you can do. it's sad. the bitch i was talking about was found with her pups. someone took her in and placed the pups. i donated $100 towards her spay. she had a great home, was taken to a northern va vet hospital, dropped off for the spay and was dead in the morning. she was as backyard bred looking as one could imagine with a wonderful temperament. i would doubt she had any known dogs that one would recognize behind her if she was ever even registered or if her parents were. at least jean dodds would be able to answer general questions about when or how one would bleed from it. if you can post any of it if they are general answers, please do. thanks susan www.sander-haus.com Home of Sander-Haus German Shepherd Dogs Quality West German Bloodlines ----- Original Message ----- From: <cnnpmm2@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; "Carl" <sanderhaus@xxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, March 27, 2009 3:29 PM Subject: Re: bleeding after spay Thanks, Susan. I placed a call to Jean Dodds right after this happened. Unfortunately, she wasn't available and I had to leave a message. My gut tells me we'll never really know exactly what happened to Ruffy, but we can check her progeny for VW. However, sometimes sutures are not properly placed or break after surgery. The vet opened Ruffy up again and claimed he could not find the source of the bleeding. Ruffy died shortly afterwards. I don't think a necropsy will tell us anything because the vet went back in and re-tied everything. It appears the only definitive way to know for sure if a dog does has VW is to perform genetic testing. Kim called the vet down in Florida, where this happened, and he was not cooperative. He claimed it was too late to do any testing seeing how Ruffy had been dead for an hour. I don't know about that... We're going to test two of Ruffy's kids. Paulette ----- Original Message ----- From: Carl To: cnnpmm2@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, March 27, 2009 2:39 PM Subject: bleeding after spay i know of one female who died at the vet's office and it was because the vet didn't close her up properly inside. she was a stray, purebred of unknown background. while many GSDs are lower than they should be for the vwf factor, both american and german lines, people don't know because they don't test and as a dog ages, the numbers go up. so a dog that has had vaccinations and has had a heat cycle and is now an adult will have higher numbers than it would have had if tested as a 7 wk old puppy. i find it odd that she didn't have excessive bleeding during the spay but bled afterwards. susan www.sander-haus.com Home of Sander-Haus German Shepherd Dogs Quality West German Bloodlines ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2008.
