The biggest misconception that people have about
Schutzhund is the bite-work. Good temperament is an absolute in this area. A
dog must "out" (release the sleeve) on command. If it does not release, the dog
is disqualified. Attitude is another key factor, to most dogs, this is a game,
their reward is the sleeve but they must earn it and respect the handler by
obeying the commands. Not all dogs are suited for this sport, just because a
dog can hit a sleeve does not mean they are capable of doing schutzhund. There
are three phases to schutzhund, tracking, obedience and protection. As for the
temperament of any GSD as stated in the standard; (cut and pasted from the
GSDCA site) The
dog must not be timid, shrinking behind its master or handler; it
should not be nervous, looking about or upward with anxious expression
or showing nervous reactions, such as tucking of tail, to strange
sounds or sights. Lack of confidence under any surroundings is not
typical of good character. Any of the above deficiencies in character
which indicate shyness must be penalized as very serious faults and any dog
exhibiting pronounced indications of these must be excused from the ring.

If that means what I think it means...that's just plain not true. Heck,
there are many dual purpose GSDs...they do SchH and they herd.
