"Tradition, tradition" as the words to the old song go. A hundred years ago
when I did my own handling I used liver to bait and alert my dogs. I cut quite
a figure with a piece of liver stuck between my teeth.
But double handling goes back to as far as I can remember having shown in the
fifties. Some of our friends have taken double handling to extreme heights. I
personally think that using liver or a ball or some object the dog likes,
double handling isn't necessary.
Unlike many other breeds we need to alert our Shepherds somehow and get their
ears up in an alert mode. Interesting, having seen Jimmy Moses when he was
showing the fabulous Mystique he couldn't double handle so it can be done. It
only takes a determined handler. Or an AKC Representative at ring side telling
us to stop the nonsense.
