Hello, all. I have not been on the list for quite awhile but I am hoping a
few breeders can reach out and answer some questions for me. Please don’t
flame me right now as I am really stressed (as in a complete nervous wreck)…
.
My bitch is about to whelp….like very soon. This is my first litter. Yes,
she has 8 titles and 9 health clearances. I am a GSDCA member and Signer of
Code of Ethics.
I have had my Durawhelp assembled for a week.
I purchased the Deluxe Whelping Kit.
I purchased 14 cardboard liners, 2 carpet pads, the Warming system, and a
heating pad. I have towels and newspapers.
She is 62 days today. Her x-ray on Wednesday revealed 9 pups (two more
than the first ultrasound).
Her 2nd ultrasound after x-ray revealed strong heartbeats and they thought
she had a few more days based on..I think they said something about the
kidneys.
She stopped eating yesterday except for at dinnertime when she ate 2
cups. Nothing today. Temp stayed in the 99.2-98.6 range until yesterday when
it
dropped to 97.9 and today up to almost 100.
She is having a clear discharge.
She is digging into her bedding.
She is whining/moaning and hunched up.
i have 4 whelping books but can’t find specific information to a few
questions.
My questions….
1) I saved messages that said breeders give vanilla ice cream, tums, or
yogurt between pups. I don’t have Calabsorb. My question is..how much of
each? I have all 3 here that I could use but do not know how much to give or
which is the best option.
FOOD CONTAINING CALCUIM IS NEXT TO WORTHLESS. YOU NEED ORACA/CALSORB BUT
TOO LATE SO SEND SOMEONE TO THE STORE FOR CITRICAL TABLETS. TUMS ARE OK BUT
MUST BE GIVEN WITH FOOD TO BE EFFECTIVE.
CRUSH THE CITRICAL AND ADD TO SOMETHING SWEET (SUGAR FOR ENERGY) AND LET
HER LAP. IF SHE WON'T DO THAT JUST GIVE HER THE TABLETS AND MAKE HER SWALLOW.
2) With 9 pups, do I let her eat all the placentas or just a couple?
A FEW, KNOW STOOLS WILL BE LOOSE BUT THERE ARE BENEFITS TO ALLOWING HER TO
EAT THEM.
3) If she chews the umbilical cord too close and opens the stomach do I
rush her to the hospital? What if she is still whelping puppies? How do I
transport the puppies born already (separate with warm water bottles) or do I
leave them home?
NO! YOUR HANDS STAY BETWEEN HER AND THE PUPPY BEING BORN, YOU DO THE CORDS
NOT MOM.
4) I have read many conflicting things about warmth. Should I use heat
lamp, heating pad, warm water bottles, or just crank heat up to 75? I don’t
have the reflector thing…
HEATING PAD TO 98 UNDER BEDDING SHOULD BE FINE WITH ROOM @ 75 AS LONG AS
YOUR BOX IS CONTAINED ENOUGH THAT IF PUPPIES CRAWL AWAY FROM MOM THEY ARE ON
A HEATING PAD.
Please share any other information that may help. I’m sitting with her in
whelp room now and I think she is close.
Thanks,
Sarah
