[ SHOWGSD-L ] We seldom panic

A number of years ago, we had taken Ben to Las Vegas to show him. He must
have been about a year old, so it was probably about 1991.
We drove the van and met Twyla out at a mall, and drove together. When we
dropped Twyla off on the way home, we were about an hour out when I reached
back
to pet Ben on the back seat, and he wasn't there. We had all gotten out at
the mall parking lot to walk a bit, and then back in the car to head home.
It was about 10:00 at night.
We realized Ben must have gotten out when we stopped, and both Tedi and I
panicked. We knew the mall was dark at that time, but close to the freeway,
and Ben had never been away from us, and would be in full panic, and we just
knew he would run for the road to find us.
We pulled off to the side of the highway, and ran to the back doors. There
was Ben sleeping between the back of the seats and the crates. He always was
a bit of a narrow dog, but there was only about six inches of space.
I think that might have been the last time I approached a heart attack so
quickly. The ride home was with Ben in my lap and Tedi driving.
