Years ago I saved every ribbon because entries were huge and awards were
meaningful.I was even going to make them into a patchwork quilt. These days
I think all too often they are meaningless and deserve everything you
decide to do with them.

I don't know why, but it seems that after a few years many people get this
attitude. I don't mean to pick on Norma, but I hear this from a number of
people who were showing in the large shows in the past, and have now
decided that the allure of dog shows has faded. And often continue to show.

As someone who needs one point to finish a dog and two points to finish a
bitch, I say each win is important, special and a real challenge. I look
at the dogs in the ring and see a full entry of animals that all can win the
points. It is just as hard to finish a dog, and maybe harder today than it
ever was. It is not easy to find a major and when you do, just as difficult
to win it, to get that championship.

It is time to admit that our attitude is what makes it fun, it is our
perception that gives it meaning, and it is a personal opinion that makes
showing dogs a worthy sport. When it becomes meaningless, or no longer of
value
to you, it is time to find a new hobby. Spending energy to tell others how
they are wasting their time, is a shame.

Trying to tell others who enjoy the dog shows that it is worthless is a
waste of energy. It does nothing to those who still enjoy it. It is only
true for the person who perceives it, and it has no real purpose.

If you enjoy the dog shows, if you find value in meeting with your friends,
if you find spending a day in the sun laughing, talking and showing dog,
if you like looking at great German shepherds, and if you are having fun,
stick with it.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.
