[ SHOWGSD-L ] Type vs the Standard

Having grown up in GSDs around the infamous Lamar Kuhns, I formed an
understanding of what "type" means, as defined by Lamar. I think it is right
and in
the general context of it's use, I am sure I am right.
Lamar used to walk into a ring with a beautiful animal, hold his hand up in
the air while the dog or bitch posed itself, put one hand on his hip, turn to
ringside and say something like "now this is simply dripping in type!" His
comment had nothing to do with movement. That was altogether something else.
It
was the look of the animal. Clearly Lamar was referring to the GSD Standard
description of the dog. A male, who looked like a male, of rich color, good
substance and ideal proportions. A bitch who looked like a bitch with similar
attributes. Obviously the temperment had to be there, in order to look alert
and confident, to be "typey", but movement was not part of this comment.
There were many dogs who Lamar showed who lacked "type" but could move like the
wind. And he won with them. There were many who "dripped" with type who
couldn't move out of their own shadow. And he often won with those as well.
So I
would say that a dog with good breed Type would have to look like the standard,
but not necessarily move as the Standard describes.
I would be surprised if I was the only one who felt this way. So lets hear
your thoughts.
