Flagyl is a lot more powerful than Tylan, and for my money, less effective with more side effects. Actually, I've never known Tylan to have any side effects. For a little dog, under 20 lbs., just a dab on the tongue will stop diarrhea. Flagyl takes a lot larger dose and usually more than one dose. Tylan has to be effective. Over the years I've found that the medicines developed for livestock are much more efficient than anything developed for humans or dogs, and much, much less expensive. I always figured that farmers couldn't afford to fool around with something that didn't work...after all, they're breeding for our tables. Dogs are "just pets," and we can pay thru the nose for meds for them...the farmers can't! If a baby pig or a calf starts to scour, it can die...that's a big loss. No fooling around with them. Not so with dogs and humans... Of course, that's my take on it...watch my buddy Chuck shoot down that theory!
