My daughter's Golden will attack his rear leg with a vengeance.  They
were told it was a type of epilepsy.  One person said it was like PTSD
and this dog did have a traumatic 'puppyhood'.   He is on prozac which
seems to help and he is gradually becoming more trusting.

distract them if you were present, but when left alone, the dogs would
start up again. I am sure there are degrees of the disorder, and
probably some can overcome it with behavior modification, but these
two particular dogs could not overcome it.
