We got through the hurricane (the eye passed over our house) with down tree
limbs in the front and back yard along with part of our neighbor's carport in
the back yard. No trees fell on our house and we did not lose any of our roof,
so we felt very fortunate, until Sunday morning 6am when a storm dumped 10
inches of rain on top of us. We had put the dogs out in their runs so they
would be cooler than what they would have been in a house without power. I got
up when the storm hit, around 5:30am, but could not see anything but blackness.
I decided to leave the dogs outside because their kennels are under a carport
structure and they have dog houses, so we thought they would be dry and safe
until after the storm passed. Next thing we know the dogs are standing in
almost chest deep water. We were able to get them in the house, but what a
helpless feeling standing in our driveway with water almost up to our knees and
knowing there is no way to get the dogs and ourselves out.
   I ha
ve lived in the house for 28 years and have gone through other hurricanes and
tropical storms and never had a river run through our area. None of us had any
flood insurance because this is an area that does not flood, or at least never
did before. I do remember crying while describing to Ann Schultz how deep the
water was. After fighting the water with mops and towels, the water started
receding a few hours later. Then the clean up work began again, not only were
all of us trying to clean up the broken limbs and structural damage to homes on
our street but we all now had water damage to deal with. Still we are so much
luckier than the people of Galveston. They are truly homeless. My brother
came by yesterday and brought us 15 gallons of liquid gold. We are providing
power not only for our freezer and refrigerator but also for our neighbors on
both sides of us. We are only able to run the generator for 3 to 4 hours twice
a day, but its enough to keep the food cold and
 run a
small black and white tv so we can keep up with what is going on. My brother
also invited me to come to his house in Sealy about an hour from Houston on the
way to San Antonio and wash clothes and check on email. Hopefully power will
be back on in another week or two and maybe things can start getting back to
normal for us.
